The Gift of Life

I donated a pint of blood today. So far, my lifetime donation total is somewhere between four and five gallons. It’s kinda awe inspiring when I think about how many people have received my blood. Each unit can go to as many as three people so when you do the math, potentially over 100 people could have received some part of my blood.
One thing about the donation process that sorta unsettles me is how little time the actual donation takes. From the time the needle is inserted, it only takes about five minutes to fill a one pint bag. That’s a lot of blood loss. Anyway, the process is perfectly safe and I’m glad to help others.
My sense of humor gets a little out of hand during very serious procedures such as this. One time the donor location was in this office building and the donation room had a view of the parking lot. I rode a motorcycle at the time and I could see it from where I was sitting while donating. It occurred to me that it would be very funny if I went out and got on my motorcycle and fell straight over. I mean it would look funny to someone watching it although I don’t think the phlebotomists would appreciate it as much as I would.
