As I mentioned yesterday, today is tryout day for my new Rockports. It should be said that I bought them online so there was no opportunity to try them on. Buying shoes this way can be a crap shoot and the dice came down very wrong today because they failed me in a particularly gory and painful fashion.

The good news begins and ends with how they look. I have to say from a fashion standpoint, they barely move the dork needle. They’re nice looking shoes for a simple casual style and I would have been happy to wear them for months to come. That is not to be.

The shoes felt kinda snug when I put them on this morning. The right one more so than the left. Not overly though, more along the lines of new shoes needing a breaking in type of snugness. The left one was actually feeling pretty comfy by the time I left the house.

I was little aware that the shoe gods were frowning on me as I began my commute. By the time I got to the city and exited the subway I was pretty sure the right shoe would never stretch enough to be comfortable. The toes on my right foot were getting squished in a most unpleasant fashion. To add insult to injury, the left shoe started rubbing my heel.

Both feet were really starting to feel the pain about the time that I hit Central Park. I wasn’t to the point of limping but both feet were definitely hurting and I couldn’t wait to get to work so I could take the shoes off and give my feet a break.

The horror show began when I got to my office and removed the shoes to inspect the damage. I knew the left shoe was rubbing my heel however I was unaware that it was creating a blister, busting said blister, and abrading my flesh to the point of rawness such that my sock looked like something left over from the scene of a car accident. Thankfully, the toes on my right foot recovered pretty much as soon as I took the shoes off.

So here I am at work with shoes that I can’t wear and nothing but a pair of gory socks to cover my feet. What to do? Well, I went by the nurse’s office and picked up some giant band-aids for my wound. The damage to my left heel looked much worse than it was. A little antibiotic and a band-aid fixed it right up. As for the sock problem, a co-worker was nice enough to loan me a clean pair. At least now I can wander around the office in sock clad feet without frightening anyone.

The problem now is how do I get home? I would prefer not to put the shoes back on, even with the band-aids and clean socks to protect me. I’m thinking about going by the drugstore and see if they have flip flops for sale. It’s springtime so maybe they have their seasonal stuff on display. Another option would be to take a cab home from work but that would cost more than I would prefer to spend. I don’t know how I get myself into these messes.
