What I Learned in the Kitchen Today

The word “instant” when referring to oatmeal does not mean the same thing as when applied to grits.
The kitchen is a foreign and sometimes hostile territory to me. I can fix a stove, a coffee maker, a blender, and even a sink but when it comes to using these devices to make food, I’m usually out of my element.
To counter this, I play to my strengths on the few occasions when I actually try to cook something. What can I make with boiling water? Well, I’ve discovered that you can make instant oatmeal very easily with boiling water. Fill tea kettle, wait for it to boil, poor over instant oatmeal, cover bowl with plate, wait four minutes, stir, and bingo. Food!
I’ve been craving grits recently so I went to the supermarket and picked up a box of instant grits. “Instant” grits, “instant” oatmeal, probably works the same. I’ll apply my tried and true oatmeal method of preparing them. Fill tea kettle, wait for it to boil, poor over instant grits, cover bowl with plate, wait four minutes, stir, and bingo. I discovered why they call them grits. I had just created a bowl of hot corn flavored sand. Apparently, grits need to be cooked(on the stove or microwave) and not just given a really hot bath. “Instant”, pffft.
