Of Spelling and Boils
Posted by thenextstopwillbe under Whatnot
I use Statcounter to track visitors to my blog. It’s a web counter that provides all kinds of information about my visitors. Where they’re from, how much time they spend on the site, what browser they use, are they repeat visitors, and even mundane stuff like what their monitor settings are. None of them are identified by name, just by their IP address which is the internet’s version of a street address. It’s always interesting to look at this information and occasionally entertaining.
Like today for example. One of the ways that people find my blog is by using a search engine and quite often it’s Google. Statcounter will tell me what search string on Google returned my blog as a result. For example, my blog comes up as the first result if you google “thenextstopwillbe”(Try it). With me so far?
I opened my Statcounter account today to look at activity on my blog and I got a real winner. Someone mistyped “how to treat a boil on my butt” by one letter, instead they typed “hot to treat a boil on my butt” into Google(Try it) and lo and behold my blog comes up on the first page of results. Why? Because the words “my butt” appeared in my bicycling post and the word “boil” appeared in my grits post. Welcome to wonderful world of the internet where one letter can make all the difference.
The really odd part is that my blog appears about 2/3rd’s of the way down the first page of results which means they didn’t even realize their spelling error and were just going down the list. I hope they found the help they needed but I’m not sorry that I couldn’t help them.

I like that Statcounter…but I can’t help wondering who it is in Ottawa Canada that reads my page.
