Ginger Girl

My sister and her husband have been grieving because they recently had to put their sweet little dog to rest. Wanting to help, I wondered if there was anything I could do. Then I had an idea. I asked Sissy if she’d like to write a eulogy then I would post it here along with photos. She agreed and wrote the lovely words below.

“I don’t really know what to say but here is a little history. I had never had a dog before but Ron[her husband] had labs before and he kept trying to talk me into getting a dog. At first, I was having no part of it because of the mess, the potty training, the hair, the doggy smell. As you know, I like my house to be quite tidy. As a matter of a fact, my housekeepers had a bet when we brought her home on how long I would keep her. Ginger was born on 10/4/04 and we brought her home at 6 weeks on 11/14/04. The pic below is from the day we brought her home.”

“Anyways, she brought so much joy to our lives. She made me a better person and allowed me to look beyond keeping my house spic-n-span all the time. She forced me to loosen up. In the beginning, the hair drove me nuts, I was constantly vacuuming, but then it just became a part of our lives. Ginger loved to swim, chase balls, tear the innerds out of her toys to get to the squeaker, bark at the vacuum, give us big greetings when we arrrived home and of course she loved to go for walks. She was never more than 5 feet away from us when we were home.”

“She had surgery on 3/2/06 to repair her back left knee (ACL). She never put the leg down again and eventually she stopped eating. We took her to back to the vet on 3/29/06 and she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. We put her on pain medicine every 6 hours, she took glucosamine and was also on an anti-inflammatory.

Ginger bounced back, gained her weight back, started playing again and besides the fact that she never put that leg down again, she was doing very well. However, on 7/2/06 we woke to find her leg very swollen. It was obvious to us the tumor was busting loose.

Over the next couple of weeks, each day, the leg became more and more swollen. She was beginning to have difficulty getting up and down and just getting comfortable all together. So on 7/18/06, after coming home from work and being unable to coax her to come to us anymore we had to do the unthinkable.

She looked at Ron and I and told us, she was tired and in pain. We know Ginger is in a better place now, but it hurts. I was very attached to her, she was like our daughter. She has left a very large void in our lives and we miss her more than words can say.”

Sissy,

My thoughts are with you and Ron.

Love, Bubba.
