I was up before the chickens this morning and found myself with little to do so I decided to take another crack at the Spirograph. Things worked out a little better for me than the frustrating initial attempt a week or two ago.

For starters, I found some pens in my desk that worked much better than the ones I had bought especially for the Spirograph. I also used the template holder that came with the kit which made a big improvement in the steadiness of the circular template. The only problem with it was the big holes it poked in the paper so I switched to using thumb tacks pushed through from the backside of the paper. They gave me both steadiness and the littler holes that I desired.

The final trick was patience, patience, patience. Slow and steady definitely wins the Spirograph race as I discovered. Starting simple with just the circles, I soon grew confident enough to try the football and triangle shaped discs. They were really tricky but I went slow and got some pretty decent results. See for yourself.

The tools of a Sunday morning Spirographer. The order in which I created the patterns is clockwise starting from top left. My first attempt is really busy but I quickly realized simpler is better when it comes to Spirographing.

Design #2 with aforementioned big holes from the included template holder.

Design #3 up close. I’m pretty sure the outer blue peaks were done with the football shaped pattern.
