It looks like I’m slightly ahead of the curve. Now if we could get Wal-Mart on board?
IKEA U.S. ‘Bag The Plastic Bag’ Initiative Asks Customers To Stop Plastic Bag Waste
Starting March 15th All IKEA U.S. Stores will Charge Five Cents for Plastic Bags and Endorse Purchase of Reusable ‘Big Blue’ IKEA Bag
It seems like a really good initiative but I’m wondering if the nickel “bag tax” will be enough to dissuade people from using them.
On a similar note, it’s taking a little effort to change my behavior(automatic acceptance) but it feels really good every time I whip out my re-usable bag instead of taking a plastic one. I wish there was an easy way to keep track of how many I’ve saved. It’d be interesting to see the total at the end of the year.

Whole Foods in Austin has always given a nickle off your total if you use your own bags.
ps,
the local cost on plastic bags in bulk is 2.5 cents each, I can’t speak to the cost to IKEA…

Maybe you could carry an index card and pencil for a week and track use, then figure out the average over a year.
