Like a Band-Aid in a Bathtub

The ticket stub from the Martha Stewart show that I went to last month has been serving me proudly as a handy bookmark. It felt somewhat appropriate to use it when I was reading “The Long Tail” by Chris Anderson which is a book about the future of business and Martha is most certainly a businesswoman.
However, this morning I started “The Road” by Cormac Mccarthy and suddenly the stub/bookmark feels completely out of place. “The Road” is a story of a man and his young son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland of ash and hell. Not exactly Martha’s world. Her crafts, flower arranging, home decor, and cooking would have no place in that landscape.
It might be time to go back to my usual bookmark which is an expired Metrocard from the subway. After all, it sometimes feels like a post-apocalyptic wasteland when you’re in the depths down there.
