A Deadly Sin, a Goal, and a Plan

Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins according to Christianity but it also happens to be a very cute and fuzzy, albeit slow moving, critter. I think both of those definitions apply to me, especially this past winter. My lack of physical activity over the last few months has been extraordinary and my belly is the proof. At some point it stopped being part of body and started to become an entity unto itself so it’s definitely time to take action. Belly, it’s been nice knowing you but now you’ve got to go.
It’s probably not quite as bad as I make it sound. I’m pretty sure people would still describe me as the “bald guy” and not the “fat guy” so I got that going for me. Seriously though, it’s a personal thing that I feel needs addressing. I’ve always been a stocky guy, or husky if you will, but I don’t so much like being as out of shape as I’ve gotten lately.
So now comes the goal part. I’ve always approached weight loss as a numbers game and that hasn’t really worked out for me, at least not in the long term. However it is an easy way to track progress so I’m torn between setting a weight goal and the more general goal of a healthy body. Can they co-exist? That remains to be seen.
Which brings us the plan part. Exercise is gonna get things started. The easiest way for me to get more exercise is a small change in my daily commute. By shifting which subway station I use, I can probably double my amount of daily walking. Let’s call that step one. Ideally I’ll do it morning AND evening but it depends on time available and the weather. Step two is a weight training program designed for dumbbells that I found online and have used previously. It’s simple, targets the whole body, and weight training is a great way to boost metabolism. Put me down for three times a week on this one.
Lastly, I suppose I’ll have to start watching what I eat. The big culprits recently have been chips, candy, and occasionally a soda so those’ll be the first to go. Having a whole bagel with cream cheese for breakfast hasn’t helped much either so those are gonna be weekends-only food if not less often. I should try to get more fruits and vegetables in my diet as well. I think that’s enough for now.
No plan would be complete without a starting point so here are the numbers.
Beg. Weight: 226 lbs.
Beg. BMI: 34%
Beg. Waist: 44″(as measured on my current belt, not jean size)
Where I’d like to be.
Weight: 197 lbs.
BMI: 26%
Waist: 40″ (that should put in a 36-38″ jean)
And there you have it. Let the games begin.
