It’s hard to admit when you’re wrong but, more often than not, the lesson is so worth the hit to your pride.
I’ve been ignoring the results of thousands of bicyclists that said spinning(faster RPMs and lower gear) is the best way to ride a bike. Surely pedaling harder(lower RPMs and higher gear) is more efficient, I thought. What did it get me? Painful knees and excessively sore thighs courtesy of the Queensboro Bridge.
I hate that bridge but last week things changed for me. “Why don’t I at least try shifting down to the granny gear and spin?” I said. Lo and behold, the thousands of cyclists were right and I was wrong. Spinning is awesome! The bridge still taxes my heart and lungs but my legs are doing much better. Not only that, but I’m spinning on the flats as well which is both more comfortable and faster.
How much faster? There are other factors involved such as my fitness improving, a more direct route, and greater confidence on the road but I think spinning has really been the key that has shaved 15 minutes off my commute as of this morning. Six or seven weeks ago when I started, it was taking me 45 minutes and today I got it down to 30. I am totally stoked! It’s never been so nice to be wrong.
