The King Has a Challenger to the Throne

I absolutely LOVE sesame seeds. Delicious little morsels of bitter oil with a crunchy exterior that pop between your teeth, what’s not to like? They’re yummy on bagels, buns, and pretty much bread of all types. I also like them on meats and seafood. For a sweet treat, I particularly enjoy sesame and honey candy. It’s simple but quite tasty. So in the seed department, sesame seeds hold the top spot. At least they did.
I recently bought some multi-grain bread that had all kinds of seeds on the crust. One seed stood out from the rest because I’d never seen it before. It looked like a sesame seed but it was about twice the size and dark colored. More importantly though, it tasted better than sesame seeds. The unknown seed had a heartier nutty flavor while still retaining the bitterness that I loved in sesame seeds. What could this seed be?
*E* is very knowledgeable in all food related matters so I described the delectable but unknown seed to her. She knew it right away, it was a flax seed. How could I have lived my whole life without coming across this little package of bitter nutty goodness? I blame the food industry. Why don’t they make flax seed bagels or flax encrusted tilapia? Sesame seeds better watch their back because their days on the seed throne are numbered now that I’ve discovered flax seeds.
