Here’s a little something. New York City has an extensive curbside recycling program for all manner of stuff that would otherwise end up in a landfill. The city even sent out a nice sticker to help us figure out what recycling goes into what container. It’s a great program and I’m happy to live in a city that does such a thing but there’s always been a little hitch that irritated me. The only plastic recycling the city will take is soda pop bottles and plastic jugs.

That bugs me because I rarely drink soda and I don’t go through that many jugs. What I do consume though is yogurt. It comes in a plastic container so surely I can recycle it I thought. “Sorry, nope can’t do it” says the city. I’ve always wondered why and today I stumbled across this article on Slate that explains the situation. Regardless, I still think it’s a gyp that bottles containing bad-for-you soda can get recycled while my healthy yogurt container is bound for the landfill.
